Explained in detail

The obesity centre in detail

What defines an obesity centre, who it is for and how treatment at Weight Doctors® works – with videos from the Weight Doctors® Nationalklinik.

Definition

What is an obesity centre?

An obesity centre is a specialised facility that brings together the treatment of pathological excess weight (obesity) across disciplines – from diagnostics through the multimodal programme (MMK) to procedure and aftercare. Instead of individual measures, nutritional medicine, internal medicine, endoscopy, psychology, and exercise and anaesthesia expertise work hand in hand under the responsibility of the chief physician.

As a specialised obesity centre, Weight Doctors® supports you at 17 locations in Germany, Austria and the Netherlands – with a clear indication, transparent goals and structured aftercare. At the Weight Doctors® Nationalklinik in Wertheim, we bring bariatric and endoscopic expertise together under one roof.

“A good obesity centre is not a place where patients are sent from door to door. It is a team that decides together, informs honestly and supports over the long term. At the centre is never a single procedure, but the overall concept – and the person behind it.”

Why a specialised centre

Coordinated action instead of isolated solutions

Obesity calls for a coordinated approach: in the obesity centre, diagnostics, indication and aftercare are managed together – guideline-oriented and close to everyday life.

Nutritional medicine, behavioural medicine, endoscopy, exercise therapy and obesity surgery work hand in hand – plus your personal 360° coach:

One team, one decision: the specialities assess your findings together – you are not sent from door to door.
  1. Clear decisionsAn indication conference under the responsibility of the chief physician determines the pathway – uniform criteria instead of individual opinions.
  2. Continuous case managementA fixed contact person and structured check-ins accompany the course of treatment – without breaks between the specialist departments.
  3. Data-based management3D Bodyscan, laboratory values and app tracking show deviations early; the plan is adjusted flexibly.
  4. Focus on safetyA risk-adapted approach to related conditions, medication and anaesthesia – with the aim of reducing the risk of complications.
Indication

Who is an obesity centre for?

Obesity begins at a body mass index (BMI) of 30. Whether and which treatment comes into question depends, besides the BMI, on related conditions such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes or sleep apnoea, on previous attempts to lose weight and on your goals – we clarify this in diagnostics.

For orientation: without a procedure, for example with Weight Doctors® GLP-1 pharmacotherapy or the gastric balloon, treatment is possible even at a lower BMI. Stomach reduction often comes into question from a BMI of 40, or from a BMI of 35 with related conditions, where there is an indication in line with the guidelines. You can calculate your value with the BMI calculator.

  1. BMI from 27GLP-1 with related conditions, gastric balloon depending on model
  2. BMI from 40Medical indication, surgery after MMK
  3. BMI from 50Primary indication: immediate surgery possible

Where we start: diagnostics – precise, structured, relevant

Thorough diagnostics not only capture the status quo, but also set the measuring points for your further course. The results feed into the indication conference and are the starting point of your MMK treatment plan.

Which path makes sense – conservative including GLP-1, endoscopic without surgery or a bariatric procedure – we clarify only after diagnostics and the indication conference. The focus is on the overall concept, not on a single treatment.

  2. 12-month scheduleFrom routines that work in everyday life (weeks 1–4), through adjustment and increasing load, to long-term stabilisation (months 6–12).
  1. Step 1Initial consultationIn person, by telephone or by video – with a transparent initial assessment.
  2. Step 2DiagnosticsMedical history, laboratory and further examinations give your risk profile.

Multimodal & close to everyday life

The Weight Doctors® MMK

The multimodal programme (MMK) links medical, nutrition-related and behaviour-related building blocks. Depending on the findings, GLP-1, endoscopic procedures or – where there is a clear indication – bariatric procedures may also come into consideration.

The MMK is a structured 6-month framework of five pillars and accompanying information.

  1. Nutritional adviceFive sessions with a plan that works in everyday life, meal rhythm and implementation.
  2. Activity logDocumented activity over the entire preparation period.
  3. Psychological assessmentBehavioural medicine assessment of eating triggers, motivation and strain.
  4. GastroscopyGastroscopy for assessment before the procedure.
  5. Full blood countComprehensive laboratory check as the basis of the therapy and later aftercare.
  1. Alongside · Medical informed consent discussionThe accompanying information consultation before the procedure.
Endoscopic

Innovative, gentle procedures: stomach reduction without surgery

Endoscopic options without surgery through to bariatrics – always the right one for your situation. With Weight Doctors SLEEVE® using pose® 3.0, the stomach is gathered from the inside with only 6–8 anchors instead of the 14–16 used previously – minimally invasive, as an outpatient and without an incision. Whether this comes into question for you, we clarify after diagnostics. The comparison of procedures below this guide shows all the paths side by side.

Diagram: with the endo sleeve, the stomach is gathered from the inside – nothing is removed, a narrow sleeve remains.

Frequently asked questions

Questions and answers

Your question isn’t listed? Your specialist will take time for it during the consultation.

What is an obesity centre?

A specialised facility that brings together the treatment of pathological excess weight across disciplines – from diagnostics through the multimodal programme (MMK) to procedure and aftercare, under the responsibility of the chief physician.

Who is an obesity centre right for?

For people with obesity, that is, from a BMI of 30 – especially if related conditions such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes or sleep apnoea are also present, or if previous attempts to lose weight have not helped in the long term.

How does the initial consultation work?

You talk to us in person at one of our locations, by telephone or by video about your goals, your history and previous attempts to lose weight. Afterwards you know which paths may come into question for you and how things continue up to diagnostics. The initial consultation is no obligation; you can book an appointment online.

Do I have to decide on a treatment straight away?

No. Diagnostics and the indication conference come first. Only then is a strategy set – together with you.

What happens in the indication conference?

Specialists assess your findings together – under the responsibility of the chief physician and according to uniform criteria. We then decide with you whether to treat conservatively first, for example with GLP-1, or whether a procedure is medically sensible.

What does treatment in the obesity centre cost?

That depends on the path. You can find the prices of the treatments under Costs & Prices; paying in instalments is possible through our partner Ideal4Finance, subject to creditworthiness.

Where can I find an obesity centre near me?

Weight Doctors® has 17 obesity centres in Germany, Austria and the Netherlands – from Aachen to Munich, plus Salzburg and Waalre near Eindhoven. The location finder on this page shows the nearest location with the next available appointment.

Where is surgery performed?

Weight-loss operations such as gastric sleeve and gastric bypass take place at the Weight Doctors® Nationalklinik in Wertheim – with an intermediate care unit and aftercare under one roof. Consultation and aftercare are also possible at a location near you.

Are there waiting times or long journeys?

Consultation is possible flexibly – by telephone, by video or on site – and our centres are spread across Germany. The location finder on this page shows the nearest location.

How will I be supported in everyday life?

Through appointments at the centre, the Weight Doctors® App with a connected scale, Weight Doctors® Mira and – if desired – additional coaching offers. Key decisions are made under the responsibility of the chief physician.

How long will I be supported after treatment?

12 months with a fixed schedule: with the Weight Doctors® App and Bluetooth smart scale, your personal 360° coach, Weight Doctors® Mira and regular check-ups. Beyond that, Weight Doctors® MEMBERSHIP supports you on request.

How is progress measured?

Through weight, 3D Bodyscan, laboratory values, activity data and clearly defined interim goals.
