Enter your waist and height. The calculator divides your waist circumference by your height.

Please check your entry. The calculator works with a waist circumference of 40 to 250 cm and a height of 130 to 230 cm.The calculator works with a waist circumference of 16 to 98 in and a height of 4 ft 4 in to 7 ft 6 in.

Very low valueThere is little fat on your abdomen. The WHtR does not show whether your weight is appropriate overall – that is what the BMI is for.

Normal rangeYour WHtR is below 0.50. This points to a favourable fat distribution.

Elevated rangeA WHtR of 0.50 or above shows more fat on the abdomen than is good for your health. Have the value assessed by a doctor.

Significantly elevated rangeA WHtR of 0.60 or above is medically relevant. Discuss the value with your doctor.

WHtR calculator

What the WHtR is

WHtR stands for waist-to-height ratio. The calculator above divides your waist circumference by your height, both in centimetres.

An example: with a waist circumference of 88 cm and a height of 168 cm, the WHtR is 0.52.

Unlike weight, the WHtR takes into account where the fat is located: it relates the circumference of the abdomen to height.

How to measure correctly

All you need is a tape measure. The Weight Doctors® 3D Bodyscan also records the WHtR: it measures the waist and other circumferences at the same points every time.

  1. Find your waistPlace the tape measure midway between the lower edge of the ribcage and the upper edge of the pelvic bone.
  2. Stand relaxedMeasure while relaxed and do not pull your stomach in.
  3. Measure in the morningA good time is in the morning before breakfast.
  4. Enter your heightYour height is your normal standing height without shoes.

How to classify your value

A WHtR below 0.50 points to a favourable fat distribution. From 0.50, there is more fat on the abdomen than is good for your health; from 0.60, the value is considered significantly elevated.

WHtR and BMI complement each other

The BMI relates weight to height. The classification of the World Health Organization (WHO) is based on it: a BMI of 25 or above is classed as excess weight, and a BMI of 30 or above as obesity.

The BMI does not show where the fat is located. The WHtR adds this information but does not replace the BMI: weight does not feature in its calculation.

If you also enter your weight in the calculator, you will see both values side by side.

Why abdominal fat matters

With abdominal excess weight, the so-called apple shape, fat collects in the abdominal cavity and surrounds the internal organs. These fat cells release more triglycerides than the subcutaneous fat on the thighs, arms or buttocks. They are also more insulin-resistant and produce more inflammatory substances.

Abdominal excess weight is also the prerequisite under which doctors speak of metabolic syndrome. There, the waist circumference counts on its own: more than 88 cm in women, more than 102 cm in men. You can read which other values are involved under Are you affected?

Where the limits of the value lie

The WHtR is a guide value based on two body measurements. What it means for you will be clarified by your doctor in conversation.

  • Only two measurementsThe WHtR does not capture blood sugar, blood lipids or blood pressure.
  • As accurate as the measurementPulling your stomach in or placing the tape measure incorrectly changes the result.
