The function of the intragastric balloon is quite simple: it reduces the capacity of your stomach to help you feel satisfied with smaller portions. In principle, the intragastric balloon is a temporary stomach reduction method – only without surgery and the associated complications. The 6-month gastric balloon procedure explained

The 6 month intragastric balloon is a great temporary and minimally invasive way to start losing weight. The first step is a detailed consultation with our specialist doctors to discuss the treatment. If you decide to have the procedure, the uninflated intragastric balloon is inserted into your stomach via endoscopy. Once in place, the intragastric balloon is filled with saline solution and takes up a considerable amount of space in the stomach, promoting a feeling of fullness.

The procedure is carried out as a day case, takes about 20-30 minutes and is performed under light sedation. After spending about 1 hour in the clinic for observation and recovery, you should be discharged home. It is normal for there to be an initial period of recovery as the stomach adjusts to having the balloon around, with discomfort, nausea and changes in eating and drinking habits to be expected. The Weight Doctors team will prepare you and your balloon for this period.

Over the course of 6 months, you’ll work with your intragastric balloon to make changes to your lifestyle and eating habits. Our team of weight loss specialists will be available to support you throughout this program. After six months, you’ll have an appointment to have your balloon removed. This is an outpatient procedure under sedation and takes no longer than the time it took to insert the balloon.

The intragastric balloon is a very safe, non-surgical treatment inserted in a short and gentle endoscopy. Patients will be discharged home after an observation period of around an hour and will commence a modified diet to help the balloon settle in the stomach. You can expect to go about your daily activities in a normal fashion whilst the balloon is in place – including all kinds of physical exercise. The most usual sensation reported is a feeling of fullness or heaviness in the stomach.  

It will take a few days for your stomach to get used to the new balloon in place. This may cause an upset stomach, discomfort, nausea and vomiting. In most cases, these symptoms will pass after 3-5 days. The intragastric balloon will then give you a quicker feeling of satisfaction and reduce the feeling of hunger.
